The new network drive housing has arrived and it's working very well with my PCs. But the iBook doesn't seem to want to connect to it.

Basically, I'm seeing the drive in the view for the network, and when I click on it I get the usual "connect" message "to see the available shares for server "Hermione", click Connect."

But when I do that I get "The alias "Hermione" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found, with the options "Delete Alias", "Fix Alias", "OK"

OK does nothing

Delete Alias gives an "Are you sure?" message, then if you persist says that the operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for "Hermione"

Fix Alias gives the hard disk map and "choose the item that you want Hermione to open".

I've tried rebooting the drive, rebooting the mac, renaming the drive (which didn't work and gave me another name in the network which I can't remove for the same reasons).

Any suggestions?

Does the network drive have any login account or suchlike on it to open up full access?

Have you tried a manual connect using smb://*insert ip address or drive name here etc...*

It has an account for setting it up etc., but you don't need to access it to get at the drive contents.

I've tried accessing it from the browser on the mac, it says it can't find it.

I was going to comment that it sounds to me like an access problem - you've not set up on the drive that it should allow you in. I'm totally guessing though. If it were me I'd be going through all the menus in the setup account to see if there was something in there about who's to be allowed access etc. You may find that you have to specify the IP addresses of your computers in your local network. For example, my network router has a setup ip address of 10.1.1.1 that, if you enter it in a web browser, gives a setup menu. Now I didn't realise until I started using muTorrent that it was also assigning ip's to the computers I had connected to it. For example, this laptop is 10.1.1.6 and I had to know this in telling the router to allow muTorrent an open port for this machine only. I'm totally guessing here but could there be something similar operating?

If it was all PCs then that might be a possibility, but it seems to be the iBook only (running Mac OS-X) that has the problem, so I think it's a bit unlikely.
