So the new RPG idea...
Jan. 26th, 2009 05:26 pm...is "Fanfic: The Role Playing Game"
Basic idea is to use the Diana: Warrior Princess rules (e.g. extremely cinematic and silly) but the setting of the TV show, book, whatever of your choice. Characters are designed by players, who must base the character stats on the description of the character in a story of their choice - so it can be anything from completely canon compliant to a total Mary-Sue. The other players have to agree that the character stats match the character as described. The rule, I think, will be that players can't base their characters on their own fanfic...
Characters who are close to canon will get bonuses that can be used to influence dice rolls etc. Mary-Sues will get fewer bonuses and possibly an occasional bit of bad luck. I'm not 100% sure what I'll do about characters who are pretty much Mary-Sues in canon such as H*n*r H*rr*ngt*n or W*ll*w R*s*nb*rg, but I'm sure I'll think of something. There will also, I think, be lots of cards that players can use to influence the plot such as "Woke Up In Vegas", "Real Father", and of course "Slash" and "Femme-Slash".
Now for obvious legal reasons this can't be based on any real fandom - apart from anthing else, I want to sell this, which means I can't mess around with characters owned by grasping megacorporations. I'm probably going to have to invent some sort of low common denominator TV show and use it for my examples. My tentative title is "Ninja Monster Slayers in Spaaaace". Any suggestions on this? And what do people think of the idea as a whole?

As for "Ninja Monster Slayers in Spaaaace", Star Ghoul was definitely gay, when compared to Hank Duo, Ace Starcycle pilot and two fisted he-man of a character. There's more slash fanfic about him and every other male character than you can shake a stick at. Besides, Brianna had the hots for him, in that unrequited way. (By the way, feel free to use this.)

Honesty compels me to admit I only remembered the title, had to look up the author.

Date: 2009-01-27 01:05 pm (UTC)Though I see much discussion and disagreement when deciding how close to canon a character is. Interpretations of what you see on screen differ.
Just think of Bob Villago - first season he's just a two-bit thug in three (or was that four episodes), totally OOC in that one second season ep he was in, and then he gets a complete makeover and a development arc for himself in third. Got to be one of the best (and most sympathetic) villains in that whole show. You got to really understand why he had to go down that path.
But then you look at that cancelled half-season spin-off and he's so damn inconsistent. Canon writers had no idea what to do with him.
Thing is, write him up as a character based on the spin-off (what was the name? I can never remember) and you can make him absolutely anything without being OOC.

Date: 2009-01-27 03:59 pm (UTC)I think the spin off was "Ninja Space Monkeys of Maaaars", never caught an episode, it was scheduled opposite "Villains". I did catch the webcasts later and I think the main problem is that after season 1, they did a "Darrin" (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheOtherDarrin) and hired a new actor who looked and sounded similar to the original actor. (He was hired to do the spinoff and probably was the reason why it was cancelled and the missing last two episodes "lost" for whatever reason.)
But you're right, the writers have used Villago as a exposition device and a mobile plot complication, so it's no wonder he's a bit hard to characterize. What about the current season where he's decided to join Hank Duo and fight the Clockwork Boll Weevil Invasion? I'm just waiting for the back stabbing scene for the season finale and he tosses Hank into the clutches of the monsters. I'm betting even money on that!

Date: 2009-01-28 04:54 am (UTC)The backstabbing is a given. If they foreshadowed it any more it would be midnight permanently. Though there are some nice hints about some others planning their own stabby delights. Villago will not come out of this unscathed.
Instead, wanna bet there will be yet another doomed lesbian love triangle next week?
