I'm trying to put a small clue into one of my RPG adventures.

WITHOUT LOOKING

...if someone was to ask you to describe your engagement ring, how detailed and how accurate would the description be.

Not very. It's silver, with a ridged decoration on the shank, raising to a ring of small zircons surrounding a dark blue-ish stone. Which I maintain is sapphire but John thinks is something else. It cost £12 from Samuels, I remember that. We were only engaged for a few months, and it was 20 years ago. I do still wear it, though, so I should know.

OK, ring of zircons is more of a vertical oval shape, and there are 10 of them. Never counted them before, I don't think. And the centre stone is bevelled so it has a flat upper surface, not a point. It's not the sort of ring that catches on things.

Thin gold band with a square cut single diamond.

It has twisty bits on it too but that's as detailed as I get.

Alarmingly so. .24 carat VS1-2 G/H color center stone in Deco/Retro transitonal fishtail mount setting with two 2-3 pt side stones in diamond-shaped milgrained settings. 90% plat 10% irid. Size 6.25 US, sizing balls welded inside to take it down to 5.25 US/K UK.

But I was at one point really, really geek about such things.

1 carat oval, dark red, natural ruby with single cloudy occulsion, elevated setting in 14 K yellow gold. Insets cut out of the band for the insertion of personally significant paperclip ring segments.

I'm not even wearing it.

Minimally detailed, yet perfectly accurate, since I didn't have one. Obviously I am not the demographic. In general, however, I can accurately provide a fair amount of detail of significant jewelry pieces without looking, so I imagine that if I'd had an engagement ring, I would be able to tell you the number of stones, metal content of the setting, type of stones, but probably not carat weight, if I had an engagement ring.

Flower shaped ring with 7 diamonds, one in the centre, 0.3 carats per diamond, white gold raised setting, cut away inside so that the wedding ring slots into the space.

Late to join the party - but am going to anyway...

Square, almost black sapphire, 2 small zirconia either side, (we were poor when we got engaged!) then one small sapphire outside again. All flat so that it doesn't catch in things. Gold mount.

a possibly-too late comment, but here goes:

White gold band modelled after a split ring with three diamonds caught between the two split ring ends.
