Is the 2007 Flash Gordon TV series worth watching? One of my local charity shops has the DVDs for a tenner, I'm wondering if I should bother. The Wikipedia description doesn't inspire much confidence, since they seem to have cut out e.g. space ships. Anyone know anything about it?

OK, that seems to be pretty unanimous. I shall pass this one by. I had a feeling that was going to be the result.

It's crap - Flash Gordon in name only. Mongo is on the other side of a wibbly-wobbly portal, they've done Ming pretty much as just a crooked businessman, it's 90% set on present-day Earth...

Forget it

I've heard it is terrible.

But I have a guilty inkling to still want to see it.

You can get it new for about a tenner online though.

Might see if I can download the first episode... see if it is any good. Will let you know if I do.

NOOOOOOO!!! to both of you, please take my advice this one time and don't even bother. It's dreadful and dull, the actor playing Flash is terrible, and the writing and budget are dire. Avoid at all costs. Just rewatch the 80s film instead.

Truly my friend, it is *that* bad? Crikey.

Not that Sam Jones was a brilliant actor. In fact, he was so bad all his lines had to be dubbed. However, there's a difference between a fun OTT pulp romp and something that tries to take itself seriously and utterly fails.
Coming back to the 80s film, according to Mike Hodges at the FFW last year, Max von Sydow had the time of his life hamming it up as Ming and you can see that. Other high-class actors in cheap productions usually have that "get me outta here" look on their faces.

I tried giving it a chance for three episodes and gave up. Considering my love for low-quality pap, that should give you a hint. ;o)

I downloaded the first season, intending to give it a chance. I watched the first episode, then completely forgot to watch the rest. Months later I found the files and just deleted them. It was just plain dull.

In a word, no. Aside from everything above, the Sci-Fi Channel dealt with the old Yellow Peril stereotypes associated with Ming by going so far in the opposite direction that he became utterly bland. You can't blame them for that (and they aknowledged the character's problems on their official website) but IMO there were better ways to handle it. (http://jeriendhal.livejournal.com/353837.html)

No, I couldn't even stick it past the first episode.

No, not really. Wait until it hits the bin labeled "We'll pay you to take this DVD"

Very mildly interesting. But full of plot holes, and not-good acting.

It was silly, but I rather enjoyed it. That said, I bought the DVDs last year and still haven't watched any.
