Presumably there's similar data for every unedited photo. Wonder how difficult it would be to use it to acquire a database of people owning seriously expensive cameras, for spamming or more sinister purposes...

I don't know about Wikimedia Commons (though I do know that Wikipedia has used photos of mine (which are on Flickr as 'Creative Commons' without accreditation or even a simple polite message) but all that info is available on most photosharing sites. What isn't, in the case of mine at least, is my real name or information about where I live. Same for most people.

Not necessarily - for various reasons I make no secret of my real name etc., so it would be pretty easy to track me down.

On the other hand, EXIF data is a good way of getting your copyright info onto a digital photo.

Yes there data exif on jpeg files, when they come directly from the camera. Most photo sites makes it rather easy to view the exif data. Which are indeed interesting for photo enthusiasts, when it comes to dslr cameras. It's rather easy to strip the exif data of, but most don't bother with it. I have seen in the exif file, of a product shot of a new camera, that was taken with a competitors camera.

I think there would be gained very little, by snooping around people exif data. You would just find out, that a pro use some sort of pro camera, and the amateurs are often keen on telling what camera they are using, that yo don't need to at the exif.

Firefox has an add-on called "Exif Viewer", so yo can quickly check out the data on jpeg

Shutter speed 7.1? That's the only thing there that look weird to me.

There was a survey going around a few weeks ago where one of the dating sites had used this data to work out when the most successful pictures had been taken and what on, so it has its 'uses'. I guess if you wanted to be paranoid the inclusion of the date would be the big worry as it pinpoints you at a location at a time, although I'm sure there are much easier ways to find that with most people...
