Waitrose currently has an offer on various Marmite-related products - Marmite itself, Marmite flavour rice cakes, Marmite cereal bars, and something called Marmite XO which appears to be extra-strong "vintage" Marmite. I like Marmite, so I thought I'd try them.

Had a pack of the rice cakes a few days ago, they weren't too bad; like eating insulation foam with marmite flavouring, which is better than rice cakes on their own.

Tried the cereal bars today - unfortunately the best thing I can say about them is that they are disgusting. As in I couldn't finish one, neither could the technician I'm working with this week. There's something about the combination of flavours that really puts me off.

Now I'm wondering if I should risk XO, given that it's quite expensive. Anyone tried it yet?

Thanks Looking at these replies, I think I'll pass on it - I'm trying to cut down on salt if anything.

I ate some XO on toast for the first time ever on Sunday. Some people were warning me not to have much so I put very little on my bread.

Seemed ok. A bit more marmitey. I can't see that it is worth the extra cost.

PS I still haven't finished the marmite chocolate I was given for Christmas. Maybe I should give up on it.

I had a Marmite bar handed out to me as a freebie at Paddington station a few months ago. I didn't hate it as much as you, but I couldn't see the point either.

Last week I got freebie Hobnob snack bars, today I got Kelloggs 'high fibre' freebie snack bars. There seems to be a pattern.

My So is a Marmite fan and I bought her a jar of XO and she seems to like it as much the ordinary stuff. I understand it has a more "mature" flavour.

Marmite certainly used to be a lot stronger. I have to slather my toast with copious amounts of it to get the same kick I got from a tiny smear as a child - though whether that is my tastebuds or the product is an interesting question.

In that respect XO might be a good investment - more expensive, but lasts longer?

It's like the difference between cheddar and mature cheddar, a more developped and stronger flavour. It also seemed more yeasty.

The Beloved likes XO a lot - I was a bit meh, but not in the sense of liking it less than the ordinary kind, just not liking it more.
