...they found an escape route I hadn't thought of. I was expecting him to be a vat person!

Loved their version of collapsing time etc., but I thought the ultimate question was just a bit facile.

So are the Silence still there, just forgotten, or have they somehow been erased from history with the new quieter Doctor never provoking their arrival?

I agree it was facile, but, well...it was on the cards, wasn't it? I assume the Silence are still there, they just think they won and Amy, Rory, River, the Doctor and the blue bloke are the only people who know differently.

That would probably work - although if they're around everywhere, they'd soon spot he's still about.

Yes - I do honestly wonder how long the Doctor, given his unique lifestyle, could actually stay under the radar. But then again, they may have set up the rematch already with the ominous references to the Doctor's future.

Except all he as to do is say he's the guy from before he was killed.

And the Doctor returned back into being a faery tale figure. Which I thought was pretty neat.

I assume the ultimate question will be fleshed out next season, culminating in the regeneration of 11. And we'll be finding out more about who he was back when he stole the Tardis and wound up exiled on Earth.

OK, that would work - some more character development would be good.

Plus I think it's one of those things that will play very well with the younger audience. Because I can remember when I was at school, and very into Doctor Who, one of the questions we kept talking about was what 'Doctor Who' meant, like, who was he.

They're still there, presumably thinking they killed the Doctor

I suppose they will never know if the Doctor they encounter is prior to his "death" given timey-wimey problems etc.

I was expecting a vat person too. Maybe that's why I felt using the robot was just a little too easy. I do like that he'll be low profile now.

As for the Ultimate Question, I can understand wanting to pay homage to Douglas Adams, because he did write a couple of my favorite episodes. I'm willing to wait and see if they come up with good twist on it, just because I'm enjoying this Doctor so much.

I suspect everyone was expecting a vat person. I never said I had any special insight...

The thing that bugs me about this ultimate question is that they seem to be implying that the Doctor's name has special powers - yet River seems to know it later in her timeline and it doesn't seem to have made her brain explode or anything.

Names are power

In a number of mystic traditions knowing someone's true name gives you power over them, so you'd only tell your true name to someone you really trust. As I recall this was touched on in the second Martha Jones episode (the one with Shakespeare).

That's something I remember from the Pertwee-era novelisations, though. I'm not sure it was made explicit in the episodes, but I do remember the novels making a big thing about Time Lords never giving out their real names. It wasn't clear why, apart from them polysyllabic mouthfuls, but there was an implication that their names held some form of power.

So I guess that implies that Romana was not so bright?
