I want to number the pages starting at page 1, which will actually be page 3 of the document - the real page 1 is the title page and 2 is the table of contents. The help (which is as usual crap) talks about something called a Section Break, but that doesn't seem to do much. Anyone know how to get this to work?

It's been ages since I've used Word, but you should be able to create a section for the body of the document, and somewhere in the options for the section you should be able to specify that you want to start numbering the pages at 1.

Put a section break between pages 2 & 3.
Go to the header or footer on page 3 where you want the numbering to start. On the Header & Footer toolbar is a button with a picture of two pages with an arrow below them "Same as previous" which is currently depressed. Click it off & you will have two seperately numbered sections.

If you need more detail let me know (Word is my primary tool at work...)

Stupid here again - what type of section break should I insert?

Never mind - figured it out.

Now I need figure out how to put the page number on the left and the title in the middle on even pages, and the page number on the right and the title in the middle on odd pages.

File>Page setup>Layout Tab has the option for different headers/footers on odd & even pages.

Thanks! Could they make it any less intuitive than that?

Yes, but they'd have to try really hard.

(I'll confess, I'd actually love it if they made it even worse, because it would improve my chances of getting employment around here the next time I'm looking for full time work.)

If you need to figure else anything out, let me know. My Word skills are scary, on account of using it for years in ways it wasn't actually designed to be used over at it's Place of Origin. (Working on UE over there involves far more Word than is really a good idea for any one person's sanity.)

I think I'm more or less OK now. Decided to go with the title and the top and page number at the bottom, both centred and starting with page "1" which is actually page 3; not exactly exciting, but I think it'll do.

I've got Word for the Mac, not the PC, but it probably works something like this:

Once you've put in a section break, you go to the top of the page you want the page numbering to start on and select Insert/Page Numbers. In the dialog box that pops up, you should have the option to select Format... That button opens up another dialog box, which lets you choose between continuing the numbering from the previous section, or starting at a new number of your choice (it doesn't have to be 1, but it can be).

I hope this helps.

Thanks, that's how I did it.

The second comment is correct; that's the "proper" way to do it, though it's a bit tough to do if you've never had anyone show you the exact sequence of buttons to press. It's finicky.

When I answer this question on the phone, I usually tell people the workaround: put the table of contents at the end of the document so that the actual page one is numbered page one. You then can reoganize the pages in Acrobat (I'm assuming that PDF the ultimate destination of this document).

Good idea, but there's a title page too which I would also prefer not to have numbered.

Could go through and change the numbers by hand, I suppose...
